Liza Avelino, a 43-year old Dabawenya, has become one of the Filipinos to scale the 6,189-metre tall mountain, Island Peak, a mountain less than 10 kilometres from Mt. Everest.

The Filipina domestic helper in Hongkong put off her start saving up enough money from her salary and bonuses to pursue the climb. She also saved up much of her holidays last year so she could go on the 22-day trek up the Himalayas.

Avelino’s accomplishment attracted news coverage from hundreds of media outlets worldwide. She has been offered funding for her climbs but she opted to donate funds to Enrich HK, an NGO that provides financial literacy programmes for helpers like herself.
