Did you know that 1 out of 3 Filipino children suffered from underweight and from ages 6-12, only 20.3% meets their daily Iron needs and only 11.4% meets their daily Calcium needs.

The reason for this is that only 15.3% of this age group drinks milk. This results to stunting, underweight and wasting.

Stunting, as the World Health Organization (WHO) defines, is the “failure to reach one’s full potential for growth.” Poor nutrition is one of the many causes of this. In Davao Region alone, the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) records a 31.6% or 3 out of 10 children experience stunted growth. This can also result to being underweight or when a child weighs less than the average for their age and height.

Stunted growth as well as being underweight are problems that should not be ignored.  If not addressed early, stunted growth may lead to lost productivity and opportunities, and to nutrition-related diseases later in life.  Also, Wasting or thinning in Davao Region has a prevalence percentage of 6.7% or 7 out of 100 children is wasted. This is now considered as a public health problem in the region.

FNRI released a simplified Go, Glow and Grow guide– The Pinggang Pinoy.

The graphical plate structure contains 20% protein-rich food like meat, eggs and beans, another 20% for fruits, 30% for carbohydrates-rich food like rice and root crops and 30% for fresh green, leafy vegetables.
